We joined the Zero Waste Month celebration this January 2024 by promoting the adoption of anaerobic digesters in urban centers. Anaerobic digesters (AD) or biogas systems are a climate-friendly technology that can support cities and communities in managing their organic waste more efficiently while providing a clean source of energy. The system produces two viable outputs: biogas that can be turned into cooking fuel or electricity and boil (digestate), a nitrogen-rich slurry which is an excellent soil conditioner.

To increase the technological awareness and capacity of city implementers, CREST held a skill share on how to start and operate a community-scale biogas system in 26 January 2024. Public leaders in charge of solid waste management programs in Pasig City and Quezon City, along with young entrepreneurs, attended the said skillshare.

The training venue was the Malabon City Biogas Project, the only working anaerobic biogas system in Metro Manila fully operated by the barangay and waste workers. Commissioned in 2018, the said facility was CREST’s first biogas project. The facility daily caters kitchen wastes from 100 households in Barangay Dampalit in the city.

Noting the high interest from participants to adopt this type of climate technology, CREST will continue to push for the adoption of decentralized, community-scale renewable energy systems and we will assist cities and communities that plans to adopt biogas systems.
