The World Green Building Council defines being ‘green’ as “a building that, in its design, construction or operation, reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on our climate and natural environment”. This definition extends to ‘green’ homes as it reflects one’s commitment to sustainability while fulfilling the most basic human need – providing shelter.
Buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Hence, efforts to reduce carbon emissions are becoming the norm with residential houses since it is the most common building or infrastructure.
Climate-conscious homeowners as well as designers and architects, are pushing for house designs to be as climate-responsive as possible to minimize energy use and impacts on the environment.
As with any building or architecture, making a Green Home starts with the design process. Plan for a site responsive design have the biggest impact on any newly-constructed house. Proper positioning of the house is paramount to minimize energy use and reduce the need for artificial lighting and ventilation.
This handbook aims to provide readers the basic concepts and activities to help you apply green principles in your own homes. This knowledge material covers three main principles namely:
a) Site Works
b) Passive Design Elements
c) Sustainable Living
